Vision Statement

The Dennis Memorial Grammar School motto, “Lux Fiat”, which is Latin for “show the light”, or perhaps, more prosaically, “let there be light”, is the central organizing principle of this endowment project. It is a motto that serves as both inspiration and purpose.

We seek to create a “beloved society” based on loyalty to school, love for brother alumni, empathy for the least among us, and sacrifice for a better future for those who come behind us. Because we hold this one truth as universal to all of God’s children: regardless of tribe, race, color, parentage, socioeconomic background, religion, creed or tongue, a proper education grounded in true Christian consciousness reliably uplifts everyone.

In a much wider sense, we equally seek a better world, starting within the bowels of sub-Saharan Africa, by nurturing the transforming agency of a broad-based Christian education, for which D.M.G.S. was reputed of old. We strive for a true brotherhood of man, in obedience to the biblical injunction to “first, love one another”. It is a sensibility that was most memorably reprised by Nigeria’s founding fathers, in praying for a land where “man is not a wolf to man”.

It is our belief that Man is endowed with certain free and unique gifts from his Creator:

First, an intellect, to guide his interactions with the world of matter, finding comfort and meaning in the present;

Second, an intuition, to lead him beside still waters, recognizing that which is true and uplifting in a transient earthly pilgrimage;

An inner light, with which we are empowered to lend insight to those around us;

Third, the heritage of free will, which grants us agency to make the choices that govern each of our respective lives.
